I like to observe my surroundings. When I go out with friends or even alone, I often start to notice certain compositions of interesting lighting or objects. This is what sparks the inspiration for my work. In the moment I feel as though I am taking a step back and almost freezing the moment in time just so I can take notice and appreciate it. These moments suddenly become very meaningful as while focusing on these images during the painting process, I am instantly brought directly back to the place and time where I first saw them. These images being created, are a means of transportation back to the memory of a specific moment as if I am reading an old page of my diary.

A MOMENT IN TIME

How can you best recreate a moment in time through means of painting and photography?
The night, the lights, the buzz and all the excitement. Time goes so fast, and before you know it the sun comes up and it's back to reality.
Everyone enjoys a night out with friends. I love to observe the nightlife. When I go out with friends or even alone, I often start to notice certain compositions of interesting lighting. This is what sparks the inspiration for my work. In the moment I feel as though I am taking a step back and almost freezing the moment in time just so I can take notice and appreciate where I am. These moments suddenly become very meaningful as while focusing on these images during the painting process, I am instantly brought directly back to the place and time where I first saw them in the heat of the night. These images being created, are a means of transportation back to the memory of a specific moment of that night. Why is it important to me to remember this moment in time?
These moments are usually over in a flash. I find that the more fun I am having the faster the time passes. So, In order to hold on to this realisation of happiness, I paint the moment I realise what I am experiencing. I want to appreciate every moment. Even if it’s a moment of silence.
These images I paint often appear to be empty stages, interiors, bars, light reflections or quiet streets. The absence of people reflects the frozen moment in time as if I have captured the bubble I am in at that time; the essence of my work is about my personal experience of the evening, the colours and compositions all captured on the canvas.
The way I capture the subject in my paintings is similar to the way I see it in real life. Not necessarily everything that I know is there but more what I saw. The shapes and lighting are the inspiration for my work. But how can all this reflect the moment In time?
The moment I see the composition I want to paint is never accurate. It has usually passed within a second. Because of my fast pace way of working this reflects the energy and motion of how I experienced it in reality. If I took my time with every detail it would make the image look static. Therefore, I like to create forms with simple brushstrokes without overthinking.

  1. Artist statement; wat is je specialisme, wat maakt jouw werk uniek?

My work is really a personal review on my excitements and moments that capture my attention. I feel my eyes absorbing colours, shapes, moods and energies during the nighttime, especially in artificial settings. My work is about how life is going on and the brush is always moving yet there is still this frozen moment in time. I like to notice what I see around me and recreate these compositions and colours onto the canvas the way I experience them.

  2. Wat zijn je ambities? Wat wil je over vijf jaar bereikt hebben?

In five years I hope to be able to develop my artwork further and to live comfortably from my artistic practice. I also wish to expand my knowledge of the art world and find my place within it.

  3. Wat is het belangrijkste dat je hebt geleerd tijdens je studie?

There are endless possibilities to create whatever you like. Never be afraid to experiment and if you don't ask you might never find out. It is also important to be able to talk about what you do, and to understand why you do it. This can help you define yourself as an artist.
