Reframing the frames of reference is a collection of 3 installation work in which painting, sculpture, performance are all coming together in a mixed media presentation. The context of these works are autobiographical on my upbringing in Curacao and the islands history and relation to the Netherlands. The complexities that are still embedded in our culture, I am questioning asking the viewer to also question their position.

Simia

In the project Simia (Seeds), I bring people (students) of different field that are also coming from the ABC island to study in the Netherlands to make a relational art piece that is focussed on the engagement of our people to ourselves as a way to show our commitment to change.

  1. Artist statement; wat is je specialisme, wat maakt jouw werk uniek?

    My multi-disciplinary works revolves around my upbringing on the island of Curacao and the island's historical relation to the Netherlands. In my attempts to understand the subtle complexities that I encounters in my daily life experiences, I am constantly confronted with the aspect of duality. Duality in life through topics like religion, colonialism, gender, inequality and identity and the struggles with that duality. The broad topics comes back in my performances, installations ,video works and paintings. In a shamanistic , playful, poetic yet still critical way, my work questions social-political issues and cultural vs institutional structures in which the spectator is challenged to recognize their self and perhaps reflect on their own position.

    To have on going projects that are focussed on the reparations that needs to be done within the black community in relation to actuality.
