The work centers on four narratives, a fictional story, a real-life incident, a set of looping conversations and a karaoke party, which were collected at different moments during M.C. Julie Yu’s stay in Europe. The works are set in relation to a tourist tent, which signifies a life in movement. As the viewer faces a dilemma—do they enter the tent or not?—, their wondering reveals the work’s core question: while constantly moving in-between worlds, how do we position ourselves in terms of belonging? The show will take place at bak Utrecht, from 30 Sep to 11 Oct 2020

Travelogues with Prompts

Informed by Yu’s personal experience as a migrant in the Netherlands, the work revolves around the confusion of finding oneself constantly moving between two very different but equally precarious situations—being othered by the dominant values of the host country, whilst feeling estranged from one’s hometown as a returnee. Taking the position of a tourist, Yu relates her personal reflections to the global trend of travel and migration.

  1. Artist statement; wat is je specialisme, wat maakt jouw werk uniek?

M.C. Julie Yu (b. Taipei, Taiwan, 1989) is a theatre/performance maker and interdisciplinary artist who is currently based in Utrecht, the Netherlands. She holds a BFA in Theatre Directing from Taipei National University of Arts, Taipei, Taiwan (2013) and an MA from HKU University of the Arts Utrecht (2020).

Recently, Yu’s artistic practice focuses on postcolonial cultural phenomena, specifically on the political tension between personal experience of being a tourist and the question of othering. Yu addresses this tension with a good dose of humor. In general, her body of work can be divided into three main categories: theatre pieces, solo artworks, and collaborative projects. Her methodologies are informed by her cross-disciplinary background, and include a wide variety of media, such as video, music, print, performance, workshops, and installation.

M.C. Julie Yu has directed theatre plays such as The Woman Before, T305 Experiment Theatre, Taipei, Taiwan (2012) and Someday we sprout, the School Café, Taipei (2010). Her cross-disciplinary works include exercises and performances like Un-wrapping the Box (2018) and Group Massage (2019), both at HKU Loods, Utrecht. Yu co-initiated various long-term collaborations, such as the online demonstration No More Later, (2020-ongoing); the street performance Fear out (2020-ongoing); and Folding space, a series of walking events and digital installation (2018–ongoing). Yu is furthermore part of a street theater group that regularly performs in public spaces in Utrecht (2019-ongoing) and a member of the Basic Activist Kitchen, a collective kitchen initiated by artist Jeanne van Heeswijk at BAK, basis voor actuele kunst, Utrecht (2019-ongoing).
